Quran and AI Knowledge Graph
The holy Quran holds profound significance for over two billion Muslims worldwide and has been the cornerstone of Islamic faith and scholarship. Quran and AI knowledge graph is likely a large and complex project that requires high resources, time, and collaboration of Islamic scholars, linguists, and AI experts to ensure that the Quran and AI project is both technologically sound and theologically accurate.
AI systems can perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence. A Knowledge Graph (KG) can help in organizing data in a way that mimics the human understanding of relationships between different concepts. KG is a network of real-world entities (e.g. objects, events, situations, or concepts) and illustrates the relationship between them. It consists of nodes (entities) and edges (relationships) and is often used to improve search, recommendation systems, and various AI applications. Comprehensive dataset forms the foundation of knowledge graph, collecting its data from a diverse array of data sources, including the Quranic text in various languages, tafsir, hadith, and scholarly literature. A Knowledge graph can help:
- to represent the relationships between different verses, chapters, and themes,
- to identify and extract specific concepts, such as people, places and events,
- to help to ensure consistency, accuracy, and addressing any discrepancies.
- To analyze Quran structure and can provide insights and responses to queries
Developing a Quran Knowledge Graph using AI tools can be a multifaceted process that involves:
- Data Collection, preprocessing and Curation
- Model Selection and Training
- Incorporating Contextual Understanding
- Validation and Testing
- Ethical and Regulatory Compliance
- Deployment and Continuous Improvement
The Quran knowledge graph can address current gaps in Quranic studies by creating a structured and interconnected datasets that encapsulates the vast information found within the Quran, Hadith, Tafsir, commentaries, and scholarly articles. There are few projects currently underway in Quranic studies but lacks AI integration to build the knowledge graph (i.e. Quran.com, Al-Quran Cloud, and Global Quranic Data Bank) – There are some other initiatives that explores enhancements without AI tools including Quranic Arabic Corpus, Tanzil.net, The Quran Project, Bayyinah Institute, Alim.org, Quran Reflect, Quran Hive, and Islam 360/App/ Saudi Arabia has been actively integrating AI and digital technologies to enhance access to the Quran. One notable project is the King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex, which offers digital copies of the Quran in various narrations and formats, including AI vector formats. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to develop AI-based question-answering (Q-A) systems for religious texts.

In the context of Quranic studies, generative AI can be used for tasks such as translation, tafsir, and thematic analysis. Several AI platforms provide the necessary infrastructure for developing AI applications, including machine learning tools like TensorFlow, PyTorch; Transformers like Hugging Face; and knowledge construction tools like RDF (Resource Description Framework) and neo4j. These platforms offer pre-trained models, tools for training custom models, and APIs for integrating AI capabilities into applications. Choosing the right platform depends on factors such as the specific use case, available resources, and technical expertise.
Challenges. Despite the above opportunities, the technical challenges are significant. Training an AI to understand and generate accurate, contextually appropriate Quranic content is considered a complex task but it’s doable. The Arabic language, especially in its classical form, presents numerous intricacies. Additionally, the depth of Quranic Tafsir and the diversity of interpretations require sophisticated models and extensive, high-quality datasets. Let us review some key challenges:
- Quality and Integrity – Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data is paramount. Rigorous data validation and quality control measures must be in place.
- Data Limitations: Building a comprehensive and reliable Quranic knowledge graph requires high-quality datasets. Existing datasets may have gaps in annotations, inconsistencies in translations, and variations in interpretations. Addressing these limitations involves cross-referencing with established scholarly works and continuously updating the data.
- Linguistic and Technical Complexity: Building Quran Knowledge Graph requires sophisticated NLP techniques and a deep understanding of Arabic linguistics. Managing the technical complexities of building and maintaining knowledge graphs is a significant challenge. It requires advanced natural language processing capabilities, extensive computational resources, and ongoing updates to incorporate new interpretations and findings.
- Challenging Costs – Substantial resources required in AI model development, data annotation, and infrastructure, ongoing maintenance, data updates, & expert reviews.
- Governance and regulation play a crucial role in the deployment of AI in Quranic studies. Transformation – Existing AI Tools VS Developing New LLM
As we explore this transformative Project, a critical decision arises: should we utilize existing AI tools or develop a new Large Language Model (LLM) specifically for this purpose? Let us first consider the use of existing AI tools. Leveraging established AI technologies offers several advantages. These tools have been tested, refined, and proven effective in various applications, from language processing to knowledge management. By adapting these existing models, we can expedite the development process and potentially reduce costs. Moreover, established AI tools come with robust support communities and documentation, which can facilitate their integration into Quran and AI projects. For instance, existing models like GPT-4 and BERT have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in understanding and generating human language. By fine-tuning these models with Quranic text and Islamic scholarship, we can create a powerful tool for analyzing and interpreting the Quran. This approach allows us to build on the strengths of these models, utilizing their advanced language processing capabilities to develop a sophisticated Quran knowledge graph.
On the other hand, developing a new LLM is a significant undertaking. It requires substantial resources, time, and expertise. The process of training a new model from scratch involves extensive data collection, processing, and validation. Additionally, ensuring the model’s accuracy and reliability demands rigorous testing and ongoing evaluation by scholars and AI professionals.
If we seek a more cost-effective solution, leveraging existing AI models with careful adaptation and fine-tuning may be the best path forward. OpenAI’ GPT-4 large language model has been trained on a diverse dataset that includes a wide range of text sources from the internet, websites, books, articles with about 400 billion of parameters. Some other notable large language models trained with billions of parameters include LLaMA-2 by Meta with up to 70 billion parameters; PaLM by Google – the Pathways Language Model has 540 billion parameters; Gopher by DeepMind has about 280 billion parameters; and Megatron-Turing NLG by NVIDIA and Microsoft has 530 billion parameters and is one of the largest transformer models designed for natural language generation tasks. Saudi Arabia’ initiative, Mulhem (means ‘inspiring’ in Arabic) is a state-of-the-art LLM developed by Watad with NVIDIA’ computing systems. It boasts a robust bilingual dataset of 180 billion tokens (90 billion Arabic and 90 billion English). This dual-language fluency enables Mulhem to cater to a wide array of applications that demand proficiency in both Arabic and English.
